From Sensorimotor Sequence to Grammatical Construction: Evidence from Simulation and Neurophysiology Author:

چکیده
The current research describes a functional trajectory from sensorimotor sequence learning to the learning of grammatical constructions in language. A brief review of the functional neurophysiology of the cortex and basal ganglia will be provided as background for a neural network model of this system in sensorimotor sequence learning. Sequential behavior is then defined in terms of serial, temporal and abstract structure. The resulting neuro-computational framework is demonstrated to account for observed sequence learning behavior. More interestingly, this framework naturally extends to grammatical constructions as form-to-meaning mappings. Predictions from the neuro-computational model concerning parallels in language and cognitive sequence processing are tested against behavioral and neurophysiological observations in humans, resulting in a refinement of the allocation of model functions to subdivisions of Broca's area. From a functional perspective this analysis will provide insight on the relation between the coding structure in human languages, and constraints derived from the underlying neurophysiological computational mechanisms.

متن کاملMirror Neurons and (Inter)subjectivity: Typological Evidence from East Asian Languages
Language is primarily constituted by action and interaction based on sensorimotor information. This paper demonstrates the nature of subjectivity and intersubjectivity through the neural mechanism and typological evidence of sentence-final particles from East Asian languages and extends to the discussion of the relationship between them. I propose that intersubjecivity is a kind of embedded or ...
متن کاملA Neurolinguistic Model of Grammatical Construction Processing
One of the functions of everyday human language is to communicate meaning. Thus, when one hears or reads the sentence, "John gave a book to Mary," some aspect of an event concerning the transfer of possession of a book from John to Mary is (hopefully) transmitted. One theoretical approach to language referred to as construction grammar emphasizes this link between sentence structure and meaning...

Constructions Nouns and Verbs 2 Table 2. Simulation results. With no open class elements, the holophrase simulations yeild one construction per sentence. When nouns become “variables” in the verb islands, the sentences can be represented by 4 distinct constructions. When nouns and verbs are open class variables, the set of sentences can be representd by the two transitive and di-transitive cons...
